Will I have to pay her federal student loan off?
Today after getting home from some shopping I check the mail box and see a letter from the Sally Mae foundation. I haven’t ever applied for a Sally Mae loan so opened it immediately to see why they were sending me mail. Well long tale small a girl I was friends with – though not close apparently has died (surprise for me to find out!) and not only is she dead but apparently I am listed as a co-signer for her federal student loan and while this letter gives me their deepest sorries for ‘my loss’ they inform me that even in the event of a death I still may be responsible for part or all of her loan to be re-paid. I know I never signed anything. I haven’t even laid eyes on her in at least a year and spoke to her on the phone once last March. Will I really be responsible for this because she apparently jotted my name down on a line? This is upsetting.. I am sad to find out she’s died- though I have no clue how or what even happened- but not too pleased that while she was living she would write my name down as a co-signer for something as major as a federal student loan. I’m a single mom with no child support coming in and living off of food stamps for crying out loud. This is just one heck of a shocker for me!If you did not really co-sign then you cannot be held responsible for this forgery. When you sign for a loan you don’t just add a name–that person has to sign it, meaning that your signature must have been forged (along with possibly other personal in rank such as your SSN). You need to contact a lawyer immediately concerning this.
Federal loans do not require cosigners… ever. When a borrower dies, the loan does not have to be repaid. This is one of the perks of federal loans, if the borrower dies or becomes disabled the loan is discharged. Perhaps this is a private loan instead. You seriously need to contact Sallie Mae, and if applicable contact the police and start the paperwork to get this reported to the police. the only two ways to get rid of student loans are to pay them off or die since she is dead her student loans have been forgiving
Question about student loans?
I just heard back from the financial aid office of the university that I’m going to be attending. I got the full pell grant but I also got offers for the federal stafford subsidized and unsubsidized student loans. I’ve never had a student loan before and theres a list of lenders I can choose from. Do I need to go to one of the lenders and see if I get approved for the loans? or am I already approved and all I have to do is accept and pay them back in the future? It sounds like you are pre-approved. If that is the case, you should have received confirmation of some sort, setting out how much you are approved for. The loans are usually administered through a financial society, so you would take your paperwork to the lender of your choice (usually your own bank) and they will set you up.

This sounds like some kind of scam. Contact the fraud department in the real Sally Mae- I’m sure they have one- and report this.
