Should I have gotten an Army signing bonus?

I enlisted in the National Guard through the Active First enlistment option, MOS 11B with an Airborne option, for 3 years active Army service and 5 years Guard service. I’m scheduled to ship to Basic Training at the end of this month. I was led to believe that I would get a signing bonus for selecting the Active First option, and that the Guard would pay off my existing student loans. Now I find out that not only will they not pay off my student loans (I couldn’t get a promissory note from Dept of Ed) but I got a signing bonus of $ 0. I feel like I got screwed. Is there any way to get out of the contract I have and enlist in the regular Army, in order to really qualify for an enlistment bonus? Or did I just get lied to, and I should have gotten one through the Guard?

Nope, you sign with the bonus IN your contract. You got screwed. Look forward to reenlistment, and do it while deployed, usually its larger and tax-free! Thank you so much for your service! :)

I also enlisted 11B and did not get a bonus. I was never told I would get one though. The army is overmanned so they are not offering very many bonuses because they don’t need people that terrible.

You selectively listened. If no bonus was in your contract, either no bonuses were available or for some reason you weren’t qualified. If you couldn’t get your promissory note, you’re the idiot who went to MEPS without it. Stop being such a pussy and take some dependability for your choices.

What is my best option for joining the armed forces?

I am 21 years ancient and I have my B.S. in Business Handing out with a Minor in Sport Management. I graduated in May with a 3.5/4.0 GPA from SNHU and I am from New Hampshire. I have been looking into service within the armed forces since around April now. I saw a kid that I knew from High School that was a grade lower than I an he had recently joined the Marine Corps and it got me thinking why can’t I do that. My ultimate goal in life is to start my own gym by age 40. I know that I need to accomplish many more things before this really occurs. (mostly in the form of a career) Especially since I have about 80,000 out in student loans, stupid private universities, haha. I have always been an active guy and delight in being active which is why a business career currently does not appeal to me since the only real active jobs within a business industry are those which require you to do sales and to hope that people will buy from you. (In that field now and I despise it) Not to mention that I want to help people and soliders help people by helping the entire country. I was talking with a recruiter from the Massachusetts Army National Guard and was literally a few forms away from signing up to serve. I have the uttmost respect for the people that choose to serve our country and this is my ultimate reason why I want to be one of those people. I also thought about a career in law enforcement as one that would appeal to me for the time being until I can have the start up for my business venture. Of course I also realize that starting a business requires you to operate in the red at least for awhile when you are first starting up which is why I need to get these loans paid off ASAP, I know a lot of people that are 40-50 still making payments. I just want some kind of outside advice as to some of my options. I have explored and explored with only one thing occurring more confusion! Just looking for an outside perspective. I know the benefits and cons of service an honestly to me they completely even themselves out which is why I am having such a hard time making the choice. Help? ADVICE? PLEASE!?

entirely your choice, but if you keep in the marines and stay there your entire life, you’ll probally be fine, and your debts will be paid off by the gov.

Military sounds like a excellent course for you. I reckon your question at this point is what branch. Consider your home life and if you’re willing to leave it and travel/work for a few years. That is, if you want to go active duty. There’s always the probability you’ll be sent into the war. And even if you’re not active duty, money isn’t really an issue. You can join army national guard or air force national guard. Slightly lower travel possibility. Why not look at the training possibilitiess for those branches and find something you’d like to learn and do for the military. You could be stationed at a base close to home, do your work for the base and still live at home, work at home, and get decent money to help with the student loans. basic training will show you how to keep your body in the best possible physical condition and then you can use that knowledge to help with your new gym. Overall, my suggestion would be national guard so you don’t give up your whole life and current ambitions for a number of years. Best of luck

Well Military life sound like you style find the MOS (job) you want to do and talk to recruiters about it and find the option that you like the most i picked Combat Commerce MOS 1371 OO-RAH and went to army and Marine Corps and i found the Marines were my best option

When you sign your contract, everywhere it tells you that if what you were told was not there they are not responsible, that you had to make sure it was all there before you signed. But you haven’t shipped yet, you can always tell your recruiter you want a bonus and just go regular Army or you will not ship. As long as you don’t swear in the second time you are good. If no go to another recruiter and see if he can get you a better deal. Good Luck!

Since you have a degree, you should look into the officer programs. You might be able to score a nice enlistment bonus, so shop around with the different branches. Officers make more money, too.

If you’re smart about it, you can save a lot of money while you’re on active duty, OR you can end up like too many others and end up finishing your service with little-to-no savings to transition into civilian life.

You can even do your 20 years and get a pension. That would put you in your early 40s, with a pension, and starting your own business.

The military is a big commitment, so think carefully. All initial contracts are for 8 years (just decide how you’ll split it up).
