Student Loan Repayment for commissioning officers?
I am a SMP Cadet in ROTC and I commission in December. When I enlisted in the Army National Guard, my recruiter did not tell me anything about student loan repayment so I enlisted without that option. Now I am about to commission and I have $ 13000 in student loans ( I went to a private college), and I was wondering if either the federal government or the national guard would allow me to pick up the student loan repayment once I commission. Anyone know if this is possible?Student Loan Repayment Program. For members that have an existing student loan obligation at the time of enlistment in the Army National Guard, there is a program that may pay up to $ 20,000 for a six or eight year enlistment as a member of a unit. In addition, current Army National Guard members who extend their enlistment contract for a minimum period of six years are also eligible for this program providing they meet certain supplies, including a certain score on the Armed Forces Qualification Test and being in a valid position in an Army National Guard unit. An Army National Guard recruiter or State Education Services Officer can provide more details.
Active Duty vs National Guard vs Army Reserves…?
ok I read everywhere that the Army will pay up to $ 65,000 for student loan repayment, Guard and Reserves–$ 20,000. My Army recruiter told me I was going to get $ 72,000 and I chose not to do active duty and questioned about Reserves and he said I would get $ 40,000 for student loan repayment… I’m trying to figure out why I would be getting either 7,000 or 20,000 more than everywhere on the internet says you can get for student loan repayment… very confusing.Question him! I’d suggest going active duty. You’ll be provided with everything you need, and the deployment tempo is probably a bit more predictable. The Army is stretched thin. You’ll be heading to the sandbox either way. (but then again, its your call) Get informed, and Excellent Luck.
The 20,000 dollar thing is just a general “suggestion” i guess of what you will get. The guard an reserves are run by the state, not federally, so funding will vary from state to state
