Check with the Vocational Rehabilitation department in your area. I went to college on VR for many years and didn’t pay a cent. The Office for Disability Services provides services to students with visual disabilities. In order to determine eligibility for services and apt accommodations, this office requires current and wide-ranging citations of the visual disability from the diagnosing ophthalmologist, optometrist, or other appropriately licensed professional. To be considered for eligibility for services, prospective students must complete an official ODS Visual Disability Verification Form, (printable in PDF format on the right and also available in paper form in150 Pomerene Hall), have their doctor or physician complete the form in its entirety and submit the completed form to our office for review. After the form has been reviewed, the student will be contacted by ODS and told of the status of the citations. Stay away from loans as much as you can. You have no thought how burdensome it is to pay them back once you leave school. There are tons of scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Many $ 400, $ 500 or $ 1000 scholarships never even get applied for because people reckon it’s chump change and not worth applying for. Well, get a few of those $ 500 scholarships and it’ll really make a dent in your tuition bill. People make the mistake of looking for one huge erudition to pay for everything when they should be targeting smaller scholarships that are more regionalized or particular to their intended field or reflect something unique about them (son of Italian policeman, daughter of registered nurse, etc). Everybody goes for the huge scholarships, the struggle for those is much higher and your chances are smaller of getting it. Research and apply for anything and everything you are close to being eligible for no matter how small the erudition. Do a search on scholarships, search your major, your ethnic heritage, your town, your parents employers, your employer, leisure activities, high school, local Chamber of Commerce/Rotary/ Lion’s Club etc. Left-handed? They usually have more than one. There are all kinds of scholarships out there, you just have to start applying yourself and make it your summer career to send out letters everyday for scholarships. Yes, there is help for disabled individuals to go to college. If you are on Social Security Disability, you are entitled to receive help from the Office or Department of Vocational Rehabilitation which can be located in the blue pages of your telephone book. Also, it can be located on your state government’s website, and it can be located via Google.com or Yahoo.com. I will list some other free resources to locate money to attend college. First, the college’s financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major’s website will list scholarships, too. Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web. The FAFSA form will help you qualify for need based financial aid from the government along with the college itself. It can come in the form of a Pell Grant, student loan, and college scholarships. This is filled out every January 1 for the upcoming fall semester until you graduate from college. Finally, I recommend joining several free membership erudition search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, leisure activities, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis.
