If I get married, can I get financial aid from the government if I’m not a student?

I am not a student, and don’t plot on going back to school. But, I was wondering if I can get free money from the government just for getting married?

LOL eehhhh no

lol. certainly not. there’s no reason for you to get financial aide just because you get married.

I dont’ thnk so…..

Filing taxes. Just married and a student. babysitting and financial aid?

My Husband and I were married in December 2011. He was employed the whole year at one job and half the year at his 2nd job so he will be filing head of household. I did not work I stayed home with our daughter as well as attended college. I received financial aid and scholarships. The last month or month and a half I babysat part time making no more than 500 per month. When he files he will claim myself and our daughter but do we or how do we add the money I received? Do I have to report the small money I made babysitting? I don’t have record of the exact amount of that. Also what about financial aid and scholarships? Do I need to include those? What if I cannot find the exact amount can we be “punished” for that? Thanks that is some fantastic info I just didn’t know this is all new. I filled out a Fafsa form and relieved Financial aid to pay my tuition each quarter with some left over to buy books. maybe $ 200. I have also received a couple scholarships where they went towards tuition when I was not receiving financial aid and then left over was sent to my to buy books and the small left over from that I was able to use towards rent or something like that.

Wow you may want to check with hr block on that one.

Your husband will NOT be filing as Head of Household. That filing status is only for a SINGLE person who is supporting a dependent on their own income. The two of you will file as Married Filing Jointly. The two of you together will claim ONE dependent, your daughter. A spouse is never a dependent of another spouse. And yes, you must legally report the money you made. When you say “financial aid” do you mean loans? grants? Most grants are not taxable income, unless they exceed the amount of your tuition and fees. Did yours?

Uh, no, a married person can NOT file as head of household, that’s for unmarried people who qualify. You and he can file a joint return. It’s better than HofH anyway. A spouse doesn’t “claim” a spouse. You’ll file a joint return and claim your daughter together. You are required to show the babysitting income on your tax return, on an attached schedule C or C-EZ, and file a schedule SE also. You were required to keep records of your income. If you didn’t, see if you can get the info from the person who paid you. If your erudition money all went to pay eligible school expenses like tuition, fees and books, no you don’t claim that as income. Anything left over, like the amount used toward rent, must be reported and miscellaneous income and is taxable.

Financial Aid for Students with Step-parents?

My parents are divorced and my siblings and I live with my mother, therefore for both FAFSA and private school’s financial aid her sole income determines the financial aid we are given. Both of my siblings were given a noteworthy amount of financial aid from both private and public colleges/universities they were accepted to/ attend. Yet, my mother is engaged and plans on getting married soon, when she is remarried will my step father’s income be included, therefore lowering the amount of aid I am given, even though he will not be contributing to the cost of my college education?

I have this exact same problem.. And YES it is included, i was just DENIED pell money bc they go off both parents income even though the STEP parent does not contribute to the college fund…

If you find financial aid for students with stepparents, tell me. I highly doubt you’ll have any luck. A lot of people get divorced in the US.

No. As a married individual you are able to file as independent on the FAFSA (meaning any parent info does not need to be put on the form, making it more likely you will get financial aid), but this money will only be available to you if you are enrolled in classes. I think you may have just misunderstood what being married meant in terms of financial aid.
