Is it possible to transfer a gift receipt for tax purposes in Canada?

Last Christmas I decided that rather than giving my family things they didn’t want or need I would give a donation in their honour to some very worthy charities. However, all the tax receipts were made out in my name because it was my credit card used. Is it possible according to Canadian tax laws to transfer these receipts to my family who actually received them as gifts? I have no use for them because my income bracket isn’t high enough for me to pay taxes (I’m a student.)

Thanks for your help!

Donations with your name on can be used either by you or by your spouse or common-law partner. They cannot be transferred to any other person.

Contact the charity and see if they will re-issue the receipts in the names you specify.

Qualifying for home loan with student loans?

My question is in general qualifying for home loans. Firstly, I am just leaving graduate school at 26 with a Ph.D. and my wife and I would like to live in California bay area. Most of my job prospects are lining up around 100K per year. My wife is a stay-at-home mom for a few years bc we just had a baby and that was her choice.

Now, for undergrad and grad school I took out ~50K in student loans. For my wife’s undergrad education degree she took out 40K in loans. Would I be better off to put the loans on 30 year repayment plans so it looks like we have less to pay each month? Would this help to qualify for a home loan?

Second, I am blown away by how much money you are supposed to make to qualify for a home loan. Most “starter” homes around here are about 500K. Based on the online calculators I’ve tried, I would need to make over 150,000 per year to qualify for the loan (closer to 170,000 per year if I say I am paying our student loans off in the normal 10 years, is this correct?! Who in the world makes that much money?? It blows me away because there are many many neighborhoods FULL of these houses and families living in them, how could everybody be making this much money? I thought I was doing fairly well…
Of course, I would pay them off quicker, but my “min payment” would be lower…

I just found out that i got into nursing school. Nursing school is going to require all my time and im not going to be able to work to pay on my loans.. I have a federal student loan and a private student loan which both became due for payment the beginning of jan because i didnt go to school last semester. I was wondering if i can re-defer my payments even tho i have started on the re-payment of them bc im going back to school???
Thanks!

for the most part yes if you don’t have a certificate or a degree but you should call your lender… most people will work with you on that. Good luck!

Yes, you can contact both your lenders and ask for an in-school deferment. They will likely require you do do some paperwork, but when you are in school at least half time, most federal loans don’t require you to pay on them. Private loans are in a world by themselves and have different rules, but you should be able to do this for that loan as well.

You should be able to defer your federal student loan but NOT your private loan if you are in school at least half-time.

How do I support myself and my children while I attend college?

I am a single mother of two. I am currently working full time and going to college part time. I go to work during the day and go to college at night, so I dont get to spend a lot of time with my children. I am thinking about quitting my job and getting a part time job some where, maybe Wal-Mart since they haev benefits and a discount card, and going to college full time so I can finish faster. I am wondering if I will have enough money to support us on very limited income. How much can you get in federal student loans per year? I guess I would have to get on food satmps and whatever assistance I could. Has anyone else been in this situation and what did you do? I have already applied for the FAFSA and did not qualify for grants for the summer semester.

If your grades are good, you might be able to qualify for scholarships, or grants that are not government grants. You will have to do a lot of hunting around the internet, but it may just be worth the time spent. Good luck. You will never regret getting your degree.

I have no idea, but good luck to you.

This depends on where you live, but you might try contacting your local community action agency and asking them about a single parent scholarship fund. ask your counselor at school too.

Are there student loans that do not require schools approval?

I am currently attending a 4 year college, live on campus and already have a federal and a private student loan out covering the cost of tuition, books, and room/board. I was wondering if there is any way I’d be able to apply for more money to cover the cost of a car, and if so how. Having to pay back the student loans once I graduate shouldnt be a problem because starting salary for a 3rd Mate on a ship is extremely well. I go to a maritime school and I work on a ferry near my house about 60 miles away from my school. Although it is not required by my school to work on the ferry, it is good experience and pays well too(not well enough to afford a decent enough car to drive back and forth every week). The only thing is that it costs too much for my parents to keep driving me back and forth to school. Also, during the summer I will need a car to go to a community college to take summer classes so I can possibly graduate earlier. If anyone can help with this is will be appreciated.

You can always take out a regular loan from your bank that has nothing to do with your school – if you have good credit etc. Or you can choose various options for your car such as monthly payments on it, or you could lease the car, or you could talk about financing options with the car dealership.

the homeless shelter

If you try to get a normal car loan it’s not going to effect your school aid. Only problem you’re going to run into is how much interest you will have to pay.

If you want to try to rease your credit score fast to get a lower interest loan ask your parents to put your name under there credit/savings/checking account. IT will still take couple months before you score will come up. Allso i would check with your bank to see if you can get a student credit card. Frist off you have to be a adult and only use it for a replacement of a debit card. When ever you would use your debit card use your credit card. Then at the end of the month put the money back on the card. This will build your credit. If you max out that card you will only hurt your credit even more.

I would go get your free credit report from https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

See if there is anything you can fix on them. This will not give you your score you will have to buy that if you want to know it.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience using this before. I need to make a payment this semester since my federal student loans weren’t sufficient enough to pay my tution this semester. I also want to take out extra money so I can pay for summer classes and graduate instead of staying an extra semester in the fall. I got a letter in the mail from them saying that I can recieve my check in two business days. I know they might have a high interest rate but I am only planning on taking out 5,000 and I can pay it back 6 months after I graduate.

Any thoughts?
Well thats why am I making sure i take enough to pay off my money now and enough for the summer session.. I have a job lined up when I graduate so paying it back shouldn’t be a problem.

My government loans aren’t sufficient enough to pay it all, thats why I’m seeking for a good private loan in which I can recieve the check in a timely matter.

Private loans will require you to have a cosigner or pass a credit check yourself… so if you have neither, you may not get it. Also, Federal student loans have limits for a reason. Don’t borrow more than that or you’ll wish you hadn’t. Trust me. Also, you will need to do another loan for the summer semester. (You can get another federal loan for the summer. Don’t do a private loan when you are eligible for a federal one.)
Hope it helps.

When it comes to the financial aid process, people often ask “Where do I begin?” We’re here to help and guide you throughout this process. This page outlines the steps to applying for a Stafford Loan. Basic Stafford Loan Requirements are, You must have submitted a FAFSA. For subsidized Stafford Loans, you must have financial need as determined by your schoolbe sure to include the school’s FAFSA code (or prospective schools, if you are a high school student) to ensure that the results are sent to your school’s financial aid office.

attn:

Does anyone know about elementary private school scholarships? My daughter’s tuition is over $ 9,000 a year and I need help

There are no private school scholarships. The state provides free public education and expects you to pay on your own if you decide to use private schools.

However, Sallie Mae offers a private loan called the K-12 Family Education Loan. This can be used to pay for private school tuition and books.

Financial aid for a private high school ?

my parents cant afford for private school so we’re getting financial aid help for next year but do they give help for anyone that needs it or do they only choose a certain amount of people who signed up for a financial assistance program?

What the various schools do depends on the criteria they use, how much money is available for awards, and their procedures. Some base decisions purely on demonstrated need, and others factor in non-financial matters and make efforts to get more diversity in their student bodies. It’s a lot of “voodoo”, and it is unlikely that you will get any definitive answers from any private school.

It depends on the school. Go to their website and look for the admissions information, usually the financial aid info is there. Also, if there isn’t enough info, call the school and ask.

How it typically works is you apply to the school and also apply for financial aid. Your parents’ info, tax forms, etc, is sent to a clearing house the figures out if your family qualifies for aid. They send the decision to the school and then the school sees if they have decided to admit you. Generally they do not know who needs financial aid when they decide who they want to admit to the school.

There is not enough money to go around for everyone who would like aid. They try to spread the money around to more students than to give full scholarships to fewer. If a family has been in the school for years and recently run into financial difficulties, they may give them priority.

Sometimes there are special scholarships, especially at catholic schools, that are for students who meet certain requirements (eg: graduating from catholic elementary school) and need financial aid, or a few merit-based awards — for students who are outstanding even though they may not qualify for financial aid. The website should explain if this aid is available.

Generally, to receive financial aid they expect the family to absolutely pay what they can. They may look at financial papers and make suggestions on how the family can afford more of the tuition. Lots of kids in private schools are not rich.

Don’t miss any of the application dates! Good luck!

The unsubsidized loan int rate is about 6% and the subsidizied loan is about 4.5%. Total amount of loans is about $ 60K. We would like to consolidate these loans (if possible) with another company into 1 loan with 1 low fixed interest rate. Any suggestions?

Since both of these loans are federal loans, you should be able to consolidate them together for a lower payment.

Here’s a great resource on loan consolidation:

I have a student loan that has a variable interest rate. It started at 3% 3 yrs ago and is now at almost 10%.

I am paying now $ 190 a month. My father co-signed on this loan with me. My credit is fair as I am paying off debt as we speak. But I’m stuck and I feel like I will never be able to pay this off if the interest rate keeps going up. What can I do to get this loan at a lower fixed rate and take my father off the loan? Someone please help!!!!!!!!

Refinance at fix rate ASAP.

Talk to your credit union or bank about refinancing this loan. There should be another financial institution that can help. 10% is too much.

You will need to re-finance to get your father’s name off the loan. You may be able to consolidate your loan if you have done so already. Also make sure your loan does not have a pre-payment penalty.

student-loans-consolidation1.com Going to College costs a great deal of money. No only do you have to consider your tuition, you need to pay for textbooks, room and board. Students use student loans to pay for a number of their college needs. Majority of these students have multiple student…

Why does everyone say to use up all government-funded student loans before getting private ones?
I can get a much better interest rate with NO origination fees with Wachovia, a private loan; while the government loan offered to me has 4% origination fees, higher interest rate, and is unsubsidized.
The only thing better about the government loan is it is fixed rate. Is that really that important? Do variable rates with private loans usually increase alot? It depends the going rate at the time in the economy right?

Most college students don’t have good enough credit and sufficient income to do private without a cosigner. Unless you have a full time job and plan on keeping the full time job your interest rates and terms they quote on their sites won’t always be what you actually are offered.

Read their materials very carefully… does it say “as low as 4% interest” then has asterisk by it saying a disclaimer like… “your interest may be more depending on creditworthiness” or something similar? Just be cautious.

Variable rate loans are VERY scary. Have you been hearing all the talk about the mortgage crisis? Those folks took out variable rate loans and now their payments are double what they were paying. Variable rates also may include them being able to spike the rates if you miss a payment deadline. One auto draft miscalculation or mistake by even a day might make your interest spike for whatever reason they want. What once was 10% is suddenly 32%.

Also, federal loans have mandated deferment, forgiveness and forbearance policies. If you were to die or become disabled that private loan (remember they are not regulated by anyone so it could be anything) may STILL have to be paid back. Kind of a bummer for your cosigner or your children!! Some private loans also have “Prepayment Penalties”. Meaning even if you pay it off in a year you are still responsible for the interest for the rest of your term. Can you imagine having to pay 14 years worth of interest even though you paid the original loan off? It’s crazy.

What happens if the school suddenly closes and you can’t finish your degree? You become pregnant and can’t pay for a year. Federal loans REQUIRE your lender to give you mandatory relief from paying for certain situations. I think it’s a total of like 3 years if you add it up. Private may do whatever they want.

private loans are credit required. most students have little or no credit. taking out a student loan from the gov will not require credit and it does build credit

Iam a high school student, and this is my last year woohoo!!! Me and my girlfriend are planning to goto a city collage thats near by get our AA degree in our intrested fields and then find a better job and tranfer to a 4 year. My question is since iam not sure where to start, Where and how can her and I get a students grant, so we can go to collage and work to pay bills rather than school. Ive herd people get like $ 10,000 for collage that they never had to pay back. A student loan is one way but if nothing works that would be the last. please help me out on this one.

you’re not getting anywhere spelling college like that

Well good grades help. But once it’s time for you to apply for fafsa they will tell you what government grants you qualify for. Another way is to talk with your schools councilor about grants and scholarships available to you. Also contact your college’s financial aid department and ask about scholarships they may offer. There may be a list on the schools website also. Good Luck!

You can usually apply for grants at the school you are going to. You should actually be checking into that now. You will need your parents tax records and yours if you had a job even if you move out of their house because they are based on income. You can also be eligible for deferrment for your books if you qualify for enough grants. I personally never heard of anyone getting 10 grand but hey you never know until you try. Go start checking into this now because I think most people apply by jan for grants and the later you apply the less you get. Good luck.

FAFSA: Loans? Grants? Both?

When I filled out my FAFSA, one of the questions was:

“In addition to grants, indicate your interest in other types of student financial aid.

Work Study
Student Loans
Both work study and student loans
Neither”

I checked off “Both work study and student loans”. So, a couple of months later, my financial aid award was

$ 1,000 Pell Grant
$ 3,500 Stafford Loan

I’m wondering what would have happened if I had chosen “Neither”. Would my entire award be composed of just grants ($ 4,500) ? Or would I only get the $ 1,000?

What should I answer for the coming school year?

well, I would only choose the grants. Of course if you checked out the loan, you’d have to pay them back…and I don’t want to do that yet (and because I go to community college, which is much cheaper than state or UC). The FAFSA really depends on your income, as well as your parent’s income (unless you live by yourself – rent and stuff). Since I’m a full student without work and my mom doesn’t get paid much, I get the full benefit of financial aid (really sweet, I even get allowance from them). If you are NOT going to a community college and would like to dorm, then you’d probably have to get a loan. Or, if your parents are wealthy enough to pay for you.

I think you should still say you’re interested in work study and loans (if you need loans). It sounds like you’re pretty much in my situation. I didn’t qualify for any financial aid because of my dad’s high income, even though I paid my own way through. At least you got the Pell grant; I didn’t even get that. I had a scholarship that covered a lot of it, and supplemented with work study and small loans. Good luck!

I’d check both, because if you get them and don’t want the loans, you can always decline them. You want to keep your options open in case your financial situation changes.

Work study is highly desired, so even if you put that you’re interested in it, they’re hard to get. I’ve done the FAFSA for three years and I just got work study this year.

If you had to satisfy the new points based criteria, then yes. If not, then no.

Moving from a caribbean country to Canada any advice to help settle into a cold country

If, as is probable, you are going to Toronto, please understand that Hogtown (as it is known) is not exactly cold. The average winter temperature is just a little below freezing, although cold snaps can plunge the city down to -20 or -30 C for a few days, these events are rare.

You will need some warm clothing. Arctic fleece is the best bet. Jeans or other long pants are essential, as are water-resistant footwear (slush — a particularly nasty concoction of partially melted snow, salt, and sand is often on the streets and sidewalks, and winter rains are common). Sweat clothes — particularly hoodies — or sweaters are a good idea.

This past winter, I got through most days wearing a combination of tee-shirt, under a fleece hoodie, under a fleece jacket. On the really cold day I had a pea-jacket to wear (made of heavy wool, these are pretty traditional winter wear, and very warm, as well as being reasonably fashionable.) Other people wear ski jackets and parkas — down-filled are exceptionally warm, but expensive; less expensive types are ski jackets made with thinsulate (or similar material) or fiber-filled. Whatever you choose for your outer layer, it is a good idea if it water resistant.

Try layering clothes for the best effect.

Good luck

dunno about how good it is for international student but it has a good reputation. It’s a small school and more than half of the student body comes from somewhere other than Quebec.

they have a financial aid office and probably an international student liaison officer.

It’s recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (Federal Code #G06852), which is a good vote of confidence. That also makes you eligible for the Stafford Student Loan and your parents eligible for the Parents PLUS Loan as long as you complete the FAFSA. You can contact an American student currently attending school there by clicking on the “Consider Canada” website below (go to Student Ambassadors – then drop down to Quebec – she’s the last student listed on the page). I’m planning on starting college soon. I’ll need some money. Do I go to the college and ask for a receipt of the estimated costs? Does the bank need a receipt? What should I bring to the bank for4 taking out a student loan? Are the interest rates for student loans high? Sources?

Any question with the word “loan” in it gets lots of spam on this site; please don’t fall for loan offers. The bank or the college’s financial aid office can answer a lot of your questions – check out their websites. I think you also need to complete the FAFSA before applying for any student loans. A subsidized loan is preferrable to an unsubsidized one, as the government pays the interest while you’re in school. Don’t forget to look into grants. It takes a little work to find them and apply for them, but it’s money you don’t have to pay back.

I plan on switching colleges in different states. I have student loans , how do I switch school and loans?

I am in cosmetology school in Lousiana with the LELA student loan plan. I want to switch schools to mississippi for message therapy. I have no idea how student loans work. I have horriable credit and not sure how to do this.

Contact your current loan provider and inform them of your changing situation and when you begin your new school inform them of your previous loans and they will be better equipped to help you solve your problem.

I switched schools three times and NEVER contacted my loan provider. They don’t care! They just provide $ $ . You need the new school to contact your old school’s Financial Aid dept and get a “Financial Aid Transcript.” (Sometimes they make you do it). Either way, get a hold of that Fin Aid Transcript, and send it over to the new school– it gives them the info they need to make the transfer.

I hope it goes well for you!

I am eligible for a federal sub and unsub student loan but need more money. My federal loans have good rates and have forbearance eligibility, does Sallie Mae work the same? How much money can you get? I need 2000.00 for classes but would like more for living expenses. Once I graduate, can I get all loans consolidated?

It doesn’t work the same, for sallie mae student loan you have to get approved for a loan by your credit, it may require to have a co-signer depending on your credit, you can borrow up to the cost of attendance, i don’t know if you can consolidate it after you graduate but you can probably see on the website

All private loans like the ones you get through sallie mae will require you to have a cosigner with awesome credit and a long, stable employment history with an income high enough to make payments when you don’t. If you dont have a cosigner, you won’t get approved. Period. The rate will be twice or more of your federal loans and they will be variable rate loans… if you are to die or become disabled, your cosigner will still be responsible for repaying the loan.

You can borrow UP TO the cost of attendance of your school, minus any other aid (loans, grants, work study, scholarships) you are getting.

So even if your schools tuition is only 4000 for the year, the actual published Cost of Attendance is prob close to 15,000 a year. If you got a 5000 federal loan and no other aid, then you can borrow up to 6000 in a private loan. If I were you, id ask your parents to get a parent PLUS loan instead. They repay these loans and they are also low, fixed rate federal loans.

Due to changes in federal law for student loans, you would also want to see if your school can legally accept student loans from Sallie Mae.

Trying to get into school, Financial Aid Question, Please Help!?

If I am considered dependent, and I use my parents information on my FAFSA, once I graduate and if I can’t make payments, would they go after my parents for the money? I am under 24 years old, and not married, so if I don’t supply parental information it says this
“You have told us that you are unable to provide parental information. Review the following to continue.
We will allow you to submit your FAFSA without parental information, however your FAFSA will not be considered complete.
Because your FAFSA is not considered complete, we will not calculate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which is the index used by colleges to determine how much student aid you are eligible to receive.
If you are approaching any deadlines for your state, college, or scholarship aid, you may want to contact your financial aid administrator before submitting your FAFSA without parental data.
Once you submit your FAFSA without parental data, you must follow up with the financial aid administrator at the college you plan to attend, in order to complete your FAFSA and receive an EFC. Also, note the following:
Under Federal law, only your financial aid administrator has the authority to decide whether or not you must provide parental information on your FAFSA.
You will have to provide documentation to verify your situation. Generally, you must submit a written statement from your parents stating that they refuse to complete the FAFSA and that they do not and will not provide you with any financial support.
After reviewing your circumstances carefully, your financial aid administrator will decide if you must provide parental information or if your circumstances allow you to proceed without providing parental data. Your financial aid administrator’s decision is final and can not be appealed to Federal Student Aid.”
Which doesn’t sound very promising. so I really need to know if they would try getting the money from my parents if for some reason I was unable to pay or something.

yes theyll go after ur parents i aplied for fafsa u get the email later

Okay, let me give you the translation in non-federal regulation English.

You are dependent. This means you must provide the folks info if you want to get aid… and for some reason (that you did not explain in your question) you haven’t put their income on your fafsa and are trying to submit it without it. (not a good idea, as you can see it gives you errors and will not allow you to get any aid to got to college). But if you want to TRY to get loans (you can’t get grants no matter what without the required parents info) again if you want to TRY to get loans without your parents info you can talk to the schools financial aid office and they will tell you if you qualify.

“If I am considered dependent, and I use my parents information on my FAFSA, once I graduate and if I can’t make payments, would they go after my parents for the money?”
If you take out loans to go to college and then don’t pay on them, no they won’t go after your parents for your defaulted loans. They don’t do this when you provide your parents information. They are called “Student” loans because the student is responsible for repaying it. Not the parents.

“If they would try getting the money from my parents if for some reason I was unable to pay or something.” No they won’t go after your parents if you can’t pay on your loans. The federal government feels it is the students responsibility to pay for their college education and this is why your income info is required no matter what. But you must understand, unless you provide the parents income information, you aren’t eligible to get any financial aid (including grants and loans) and must go through a bunch of hoops to try to get loans without it.

Submit your parents income info if you want to get any aid to go to college. YOU are the person who

I’m going to community college in the fall for a semester, which I can afford, and then transferring to a university for winter semester. I will definitely have to apply for loans for that, I’ve filled out my FAFSA and the school won’t give me an aid package until November, which I believe is pretty close to the payment deadline. How soon should I apply for federal student loans?
